Colored Spanning Graphs for Set Visualization

چکیده
We study an algorithmic problem that is motivated by ink minimization for sparse set visualizations. Our input is a set of points in the plane which are either blue, red, or purple. Blue points belong exclusively to the blue set, red points belong exclusively to the red set, and purple points belong to both sets. A red-blue-purple spanning graph (RBP spanning graph) is a set of edges connecting the points such that the subgraph induced by the red and purple points is connected, and the subgraph induced by the blue and purple points is connected. We study the geometric properties of minimum RBP spanning graphs and the algorithmic problems associated with computing them. Specifically, we show that the general problem can be solved in polynomial time using matroid techniques. In addition, we discuss more efficient algorithms for the case in which points are located on a line or a circle, and also describe a fast ( 1 2 ρ + 1)-approximation algorithm, where ρ is the Steiner ratio. In memoriam: Ferran Hurtado (1951–2014) This paper was initiated during a research visit hosted by Ferran and his group in Barcelona. Following tradition, hours of research were complemented by relaxing evenings with great food and wine. The authors would like to thank Ferran for being a supportive mentor, an inspiring colleague, and a great friend.

An f-chromatic spanning forest of edge-colored complete bipartite graphs
In 2001, Brualdi and Hollingsworth proved that an edge-colored balanced complete bipartite graph Kn,n with a color set C = {1, 2, 3, . . . , 2n − 1} has a heterochromatic spanning tree if the number of edges colored with colors in R is more than |R|/4 for any non-empty subset R ⊆ C, where a heterochromatic spanning tree is a spanning tree whose edges have distinct colors, namely, any color appe...
متن کاملMulti-colored Spanning Graphs
We study a problem proposed by Hurtado et al. [10] motivated by sparse set visualization. Given n points in the plane, each labeled with one or more primary colors, a colored spanning graph (CSG) is a graph such that for each primary color, the vertices of that color induce a connected subgraph. The Min-CSG problem asks for the minimum sum of edge lengths in a colored spanning graph. We show th...
متن کاملColored Trees in Edge-Colored Graphs
The study of problems modeled by edge-colored graphs has given rise to important developments during the last few decades. For instance, the investigation of spanning trees for graphs provide important and interesting results both from a mathematical and an algorithmic point of view (see for instance [1]). From the point of view of applicability, problems arising in molecular biology are often ...
متن کاملMaximum colored trees in edge-colored graphs
Abstract We consider maximum properly edge-colored trees in edge-colored graphs Gc. We also consider the problem where, given a vertex r, determine whether the graph has a spanning tree rooted at r, such that all root-to-leaf paths are properly colored. We consider these problems from graphtheoretic as well as algorithmic viewpoints. We prove their optimization versions to be NP-hard in general...
متن کاملGeometric Spanning Cycles in Bichromatic Point Sets
Given a set of points in the plane each colored either red or blue, we find non-self-intersecting geometric spanning cycles of the red points and of the blue points such that each edge of the red spanning cycle is crossed at most three times by the blue spanning cycle and vice-versa.
